Mulch can be very attractive and it adds many benefits to vegetation.
Mulching mimics the natural environment found in forests where leaves blanket the soil surface. As the leaves and small branch material breaks down it replenishes the soil surface with nutrients. However it can be very detrimental to trees and shrubs if its applied too thick. A general rule of thumb is three inches. Always make sure mulch material is kept away from tree trunks. Over mulching around landscape trees smothers the root flare and can lead to disease or even death. We this this mistake quite often.
